PISD Board Approves Day Care, Extends Contracts

After a three-hour executive session, the PISD Board of Trustees began open session with a statement from PHS Welding Teacher Andrew Lackey who spoke in support of  Principal Danny Finch.  Lackey emphasized Finch’s support of CTE (Career Technology Education) programs.   PHS Teacher Lisa Dear also spoke in support of Finch reading a letter signed by a number of PHS faculty members.

Superintendent Tim Little presented a lengthy list of Student Recognitions and invited the group to pray for PJH Teacher Doug Shelton who is battling for his life in an Amarillo hospital.

Little discussed enrollment trends and told the board that he projects enrollment to remain flat for the next year.  He and CFO Doug Kile will use those enrollment numbers as they begin to estimate revenue for the coming year.

In the Directors reports, Director of Communications and Safety Darin Clark informed the board that the grant has come through to allow the installation of NightLocks at the remaining campuses.  The devices are already installed at Perryton High School and Top of Texas AEC.

Clark also updated the board on the new PISD mobile app saying that it is ready except for some final adjustments and will be available to the public in the next few days.

Technology Director Rodney Throgmorton reported on some infrared surveillance cameras that they have set up to allow Wright Elementary students to monitor their chicken eggs overnight in the event that they hatch outside school hours.

Finch reported that End of Course Exams are approaching and mentioned that the One Act Play is headed to Bi-District this weekend.

Top of Texas Principal Ronnie Watson reported that the TTAEC graduation has been moved back one day to May 24 to allow the graduates to attend a reception at the Catholic Church on the 23rd.

In action items, the board approved extending the contracts of all campus principals unanimously except for Finch who was approved 6-1 with Tyler Merkel voting against.   The vote to extend PJH Assistant Principal Brian Whitecotton’s contract died for lack of a second.

The board voted 4-3 to extend Athletic Director Dustin Klafka’s contract.  Voting against were Board President Monty Kinnard, Loyd Cator, and Wes Beal. 

All teacher, librarian and counselor contracts were extended unanimously.

The calendar for the 2019-2020 school year was approved along with staff duty calendars.

Contracts were approved with Ochiltree General Hospital, The Texas Workforce Commission and First Christian Church which was the final step to moving forward on starting a District-run daycare facility to open in August.

Dr. Little presented an Interlocal Agreement with Darrouzett ISD regarding the busing of students from within Perryton ISD.  Darrouzett agrees not to pick students up on Main street in Perryton. They will be using the Wall’s parking lot and they agree not to advertise in Perryton for students.

The date for a Budget Workshop was set for April 16 at 6:00 and the next school board meeting was set for April 23 with Executive Session at 6:00 and Open Session at 7:00.
